Read almost any book on special operations and you will see perseverance in action, as it is a mental requirement for anybody who wants to serve in that capacity. These men keep pushing forward despite all the different obstacles and setbacks in their way. The role of Perseverance in survival is a major one and if you do not set your mindset to Persevere when put in a survival situation you will die.
Having a STRONG MINDSET is not something that happens overnight. It is something that you must work at every day. In your work, in the Gym, in your relationships, and in all the little things you do. Perseverance is but one trait of a Strong Mindset. You must live with the intention of developing a strong mind, it will not happen unless you put in the work. Lets look at a very simple example of perseverance in action: Exhausted on the last set of your workout? Add 5 lbs and push through it. Even if you are not successful in completing the whole set you will have grown mentally by making that decision in your head to persevere and finish strong.
Having a strong mindset can easily be the largest factor when it comes to life & death or success & failure.
"The Spirit is Willing, but the Flesh is Weak" Matthew 26:41
This phrase from the Bible was written in regards to falling into temptation, but can be easily applied to many challenging things in life. You are capable of great things, but you must set your mind to overcome the weakness of the flesh. There are countless examples of this in which I could reference, however I am going to look at a more recent & popular example coming out of the SEAL Teams. Lt. Jason Redman was injured severely while serving overseas, while fighting to recover in Bethesda he posted this note on the door:
Attention – To all those who enter here
If you are coming into this room with sorrow or to feel sorry for my wounds, go elsewhere.
The wounds I received, I got in a job I love, doing it for people I love, supporting the freedom
of a country I deeply love. I am incredibly tough and will make a full recovery.
What is full? That is the absolute utmost physically my body has the ability to recover. Then
I will push that about 20% further through sheer mental tenacity.
This room you are about to enter is a room of fun, optimism, and intense rapid regrowth. If you are not prepared for that
Despite his physical body being tattered and torn he overcame his injuries with his strong mindset which was set to persevere himself back to good health.
Okay, that is enough for now, so as the Spartans used to say, “March or Die”
